Boab Tree - Interesting Notes

  • The Australian Boab tree (Adansonia gregorii), part of the Malvaceae family, is an iconic tree that is a symbol of the Kimberly region of Western Australia. The specific name ‘gregorii’ honours the Australian explorer Augustus Gregory.

  • The boab in Kings Park, Western Australia, was transplanted in 2008 from the Kimberley region and transported over 1,990 miles by truck.

  • The massive journey of the Kings Park boab was sometimes called a “boab odyssey,” and people lined highways to watch it pass by on its way south.

  • Deeply tied to Australian Aboriginal culture, featuring in stories, art, and traditional medicine.
