Boab Tree - Interesting Notes
The Australian Boab tree (Adansonia gregorii), part of the Malvaceae family, is an iconic tree that is a symbol of the Kimberly region of Western Australia. The specific name ‘gregorii’ honours the Australian explorer Augustus Gregory.
The boab in Kings Park, Western Australia, was transplanted in 2008 from the Kimberley region and transported over 1,990 miles by truck.
The massive journey of the Kings Park boab was sometimes called a “boab odyssey,” and people lined highways to watch it pass by on its way south.
Deeply tied to Australian Aboriginal culture, featuring in stories, art, and traditional medicine.
