Banksia Cones - Interesting Notes
There are a 173 species of Banksia in the plant family Proteaceae, and all but one occur naturally only in Australia.
Banksias are recognised by their characteristic flower spikes and fruiting "cones".
Most Banksia cones only release their seeds after fire or intense heat, an adaptation that helps them regenerate in the tough Australian bush.
Their knobbly, eye-like openings give them an almost mystical presence. In folklore and art (like May Gibbs’ Banksia Men), they represent watchfulness, guardianship, and sometimes mischief.
