Banksia Cones - Interesting Notes

  • There are a 173 species of Banksia in the plant family Proteaceae, and all but one occur naturally only in Australia.

  • Banksias are recognised by their characteristic flower spikes and fruiting "cones".

  • Most Banksia cones only release their seeds after fire or intense heat, an adaptation that helps them regenerate in the tough Australian bush.

  • Their knobbly, eye-like openings give them an almost mystical presence. In folklore and art (like May Gibbs’ Banksia Men), they represent watchfulness, guardianship, and sometimes mischief.
